In a Kenyan rural village lies the Mbaka Oromo Primary School, a dirt-floored school without electricity and sufficient furniture. Here, children do not have basic educational necessities such as books, paper, and pencils; and yet they still trek miles by foot over rough terrain to attend this school. The school provides over 610 students with the opportunity to escape the barriers imposed by extreme poverty and AIDS, which force parentless children to become heads of their households at a very young age. It is our duty to take the initiative of reaching out to those less fortunate. Our mission is to help ensure that the students in the Mbaka Oromo Primary School of Western Kenya have the necessary and proper tools to facilitate maximal learning. We propose to provide computers and solar panels, an eco-friendly and feasible alternative source for electricity. The electricity provided by the solar panels will effectively elongate learning hours and provide access to computers and the internet, allowing students to prepare for entry tests into secondary schools. This change will cultivate an environment in which every student of Mbaka Oromo Primary School has the opportunity to live up to his or her potential. As students with the power to implement change, we see it as our responsibility to give back to our global community. In fostering this change, we hope to light their rooms, their hearts and minds, and to believe that we can all achieve something greater than ourselves.
